Brief Biography:
Born and raised in metropolitan Detroit Michigan, Sherry Moore has made a lifelong journey of expressing life through the lens of art. She recalls her introduction to the art world during an elementary school trip to the Detroit Institute of Arts. This experience, coupled with the support and praise from family members, confirmed Moore’s calling by the age of 8. Since childhood Moore has pondered the intricate connection between the artist and the natural world.
Coming from a lineage where art held significance, Moore took inspiration from a Great Uncle, an accomplished graphic illustrator and her Grandmother a landscape painter. Following her passion, she pursued her academic and artistic studies at Wayne State University where she earned Bachelor and Master's of Fine Arts with a concentration in painting graduating Summa Cum Laude in the top five percent of her class. For both degrees Moore had the good fortune to be mentored by the highly regarded painter, Robert Wilbert.
While still in Graduate school, Moore began her career working part-time at the Detroit Institute of Arts and as an instructor in adult continuing education courses at the College for Creative Studies in Detroit. After graduation Moore continued teaching at the College for Creative Studies being hired as an instructor in the school's Foundations Department teaching Design courses where she taught for more than twenty five years. In addition to her work for CCS, Moore worked for twenty years at Henry Ford College teaching drawing classes. Finally, on a decisive career move, she retired from teaching to channel her focus on making art full time.
Moore is fascinated by the natural world and existential questions regarding life. Among her favorite subjects are animals, especially the behaviors of dogs and dwellings, the latter which she sees as metaphors for security and/or isolation. Another avenue of her work involves the consistent repetition of words and/or objects in grid-like formats to be read as patterns. Moore honed her technical skills through her studies and years of practice in the studio. She acknowledges her mentor, Robert Wilbert, along with other renowned artists like Claude Manet, Andy Warhol, Emil Nolde, Odd Nerdrum, Helene Shjerbeck, and Leonardo Drew, as major influences. Since 1991, Moore has been showcasing her art in various local and national galleries.
Over her career, Moore has been honored with several awards including the Wayne State University Merit Scholarship, Liquitex Achievement Award, Richard and Irene Sowinski Scholarship, Wayne State’s Graduate Professional Scholarships and most recently she was awarded first place in the “Emerge” exhibit at the Ellen Kayrod Gallery in Detroit. Her work has been featured in prominent exhibitions at the Birmingham Bloomfield Art Center, Scarab Club, Paint Creek Art Center and Marygrove College, earning accolades for her exquisite palette, composition, and pristine craftsmanship. Moore's art is also held in numerous private and commercial collections.
Moore strongly resonates with the belief that art serves as a pillar of sanity and beauty in an often chaotic and tumultuous world.
